A gamified approach to soliciting resident feedback on budget priorities.

Context

The Budget in a Box board game is a project developed by the City of Austin in 2013 to collect feedback from residents on their priorities regarding the city budget for the following fiscal year. Having seen great success with the game, the Office of Public Information wanted to bring the digital world’s experience to increase public engagement.

My role

I designed and co-developed a mobile-friendly web application that used the same increase/decrease/maintain budget feedback mechanism of the board game. The city then collected this feedback to report to City Council and the public.

Outcome

The digital Budget in a Box resulted in a 214% increase in online public engagement, and we received an award of recognition from Mayor Adler on October 1, 2015.
